Train in Florida or the Adirondacks? An honest comparison.
Pilots from Albany, Saratoga, the Hudson Valley, New York City, Vermont, western Massachusetts and Montreal ask us this every week. Here is our straight answer — including the cases where a Florida school is the better choice.

Where Florida wins
Florida has excellent helicopter schools, and for two kinds of student the move south is the right call.
The R22 hourly price
If your goal is a flying career on the lowest possible budget, Florida's Robinson R22 and Schweizer S300 programs are hard to beat on sticker price. Pelican Flight Training lists private-pilot programs at about $15,000–$20,000 and an S300C package at $18,950. Helicopter Academy lists R22 time building at $225 per hour. We do not operate an R22, and we will not pretend an R44 hour costs what an R22 hour costs.

Winter flying days
Florida flies in January. So do we — on the days the weather is right, and there are fewer of them. If you need to log the largest number of hours in the shortest calendar window between December and March, Florida's weather is an honest advantage. Our answer to winter is a smaller number of flying days used well, with ground lessons on the rest; it is not more flying days than Florida.
Where the Adirondacks win
R44 from day one, at Florida R44 prices
Our dual rate is $750 per Hobbs hour all-in: the R44 Raven II, the fuel it burns, and the CFII beside you. Helicopter Pro (Sarasota) lists the R44 at $750/hr with instructor; Keen Fly (Fort Lauderdale) lists $850/hr; Tampa Bay Aviation lists R44 rental at $585/hr plus instruction. Prepaid PPL-H blocks bring ours to $700 or $675/hr. The R44 is the aircraft tour and utility operators fly — you will not need a second transition later.
Mountain and confined-area skills built in
Ridgelines, valley wind, pinnacles, lakes and rivers are our training area, not a course you fly somewhere else afterward. Pilots who trained in flat country come here for exactly this: see the Adirondack Mountain & Confined-Area Course.
Four-season decision-making
Density altitude in July, cold-weather operations in January, and real go/no-go calls the whole year. You graduate having made weather decisions, not just read about them.
Housing on the field at no additional cost
Block-time and immersion students stay in a private unit steps from the hangar — office, bed, full bath, kitchen, Wi-Fi — with no housing charge during the training stay. Living on the field →
One dedicated resident CFII, no instructor queue
Walter Dusseldorp, CFII (Helicopter), is the instructor on every flight. You never wait for an instructor to free up, and nobody has to re-learn your flying from a file.
Close to home for the Northeast
Harris Airport (83K) in Fort Ann is a drive from Albany, Saratoga, the Hudson Valley, New York City, Vermont, western Massachusetts and Montreal. No airfare, no months away from work and family.

Which is right for you?
Choose an R22 school in Florida if…
- You are starting from zero and the total budget is the deciding factor
- You want the most flying days in the shortest calendar window, December through March
- You are happy to transition to the R44 later, when a job asks for it
- You can relocate for several months
That is a fine choice, and plenty of good pilots made it. If you later need R44 time, the R44 Job-Ready Block is here for you.
Choose the Adirondacks if…
- You want the R44 from day one, at an R44 price, with no second transition
- You want mountain and confined-area skills built into your training, not bought later
- You want the judgment that comes from four seasons of real weather calls
- You want one instructor who knows your flying, and housing on the field when you stay
- You live within a drive of Fort Ann and would rather keep your job and your family close
- You already hold a fixed-wing certificate and want the helicopter add-on
