What a seat is

One stay, one instructor, one of four programs

A seat is a 7–10-day stay on the field — the private unit steps from the hangar, two flights a day when the weather allows, ground sessions when it does not — for one of the programs below. The deposit is the same for all four.

Weather-day policy

Some days you will not fly. Here is what happens instead.

  • The CFII makes the go/no-go call each morning, and you sit in on it
  • A weather day becomes a ground-lesson day — the syllabus keeps moving
  • No housing charge for weather days; the unit stays yours
  • Your flight hours are yours: where the calendar allows we extend the stay, otherwise the remaining hours fly on a return date
Winter flying

Why winter makes better pilots

Short daylight. You plan the day backward from civil twilight, and you learn what a tight window does to your decisions.

Cold-weather operations. Preheat, cold starts, carb heat discipline, frost and snow on the aircraft, and a hangar that is heated for a reason.

Dense air. Cold air gives the R44 performance margins you will never see in July; you feel what density altitude actually means by flying both ends of it.

Decision-making. Flat light over snow, fast-moving weather, marginal days you decline — the go/no-go judgment that separates pilots who are current from pilots who are ready.

Capacity, honestly

Four seats, because that is what we can run well

One aircraft, one CFI, one on-field unit and a partner B&B 55 minutes away. That means about two students at a time, and four 7–10-day seats across January–March. Seats are counted here by hand — the badge reads 4 of 4 seats open until a deposit lands.

Where you stay

The private unit on the field — office, bed, full bath, kitchen, Wi-Fi, steps from the hangar — is included for the stay. A second student in the same window stays at the partner B&B 55 minutes away. Food and travel are not included.

Living on the field →

Weight: 285 lb per seat and no more than 540 lb total for everyone on board other than the pilot in command. The pilot makes the final call on every flight depending on weather, fuel and flight length.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the $2,500 deposit do?
It holds one of the four seats and your dates on the field. It is refundable until Dec 31, 2026. From Jan 1, 2027 it is credited in full to the block or course you chose, so nothing is lost — it simply becomes the first $2,500 of your program.
How many days will I actually fly?
Fewer than in July, and we will not pretend otherwise. A seat is a 7–10-day stay; the flying days depend on the weather, and the rest are ground days. The flight hours in your block are yours whether they take one stay or two, and there is no housing charge for weather days.
Why only four seats?
One aircraft, one CFI, one on-field unit and a partner B&B 55 minutes away. That is about two students at a time, and four 7–10-day seats across January–March is what we can run well. We would rather tell you that than overbook.
I am a fixed-wing pilot. Is a winter seat right for the add-on?
Often, yes. The add-on rotorcraft rating is typically 25–35 hours, and a focused stay with one instructor gets a lot of it done. See Add-on Rotorcraft and choose “Add-on Rotorcraft” in the form below.
Is there a weight limit?
Weight: 285 lb per seat and no more than 540 lb total for everyone on board other than the pilot in command. The pilot makes the final call on every flight depending on weather, fuel and flight length.
